The injunction entitled "On Organization of New Structural Subdivisions for International Co-operation" was issued on May 31st 1992. It declared that a Preparatory Branch, a Dean's Office for International Students' Education and a Department of Russian for International Students were to be founded. It was the official start of the Department History.

The first Head of the Department and at the same time the Dean for International Students' Education was Natalya Ivanovna Kudryashova. Dr. Kudryashova was rewarded for her past services with a Medal "For Honorary Higher School Members".

At that time more then 250 students from various countries (mainly from the Near East) were taught at the Department.

Due to the difficult situation in Russia in the beginning of the last century nineties the number of foreign students was decreasing and the Department status changed to a Course of Russian as a Foreign Language at the Department of Foreign Languages. The Head of Course was Associate Professor, PhD Ludmila Dines. Since October 2003 the Course was in the Russian and Classical Philology Department's charge.

During the academic year of 2003-2004 the situation considerably changed. International activities of Saratov State Medical University in teaching students from various countries of the world was rapidly developing. The high degree of our graduates qualification (proved by national qualifying examinations successfully passed in their countries) determined a particular interest to our University. The University authorities are constantly trying to find new and effective ways of teaching. Besides teaching foreign citizens in the basic educational programmes framework since 2003-2004 a new English-Medium subdivision was organized where the training is conducted partially in English.

Professor P.V. Glybochko, M.D., SSMU Rector officially reported, that "number of foreign students getting education at our University is now 2.5 times more than it was last year. Now students from 26 countries study here." All this caused forming the Course of Russian as a Foreign Language into a separate Department. The Department is headed by Larissa Petrovna Prokofieva, Ph.D. in Linguistics, Associate Professor.

Training Scheme

"Russian as a foreign language" is a practical discipline, i. e. theoretical researches in this sphere are subordinated to the needs of training methods. The general aim of teaching Russian for Foreign students in a language environment includes practical (communicative), educational and pedagogical aspects which is determined by main task for training foreign specialists. Teaching Russian also requires forming academic style which is necessary for further studies at a medical higher school. Basic skills in reading, listening comprehension, speaking and writing are formed, and finally it helps in a) mastering the major, b) communicating in the Russian language environment, c) using Russian after coming back home.

Training Scheme at the Department includes two parallel curricula: English Medium and Russian Medium (Preparatory Course and the following courses).

Based on the training scheme all necessary programs have been worked out. Programs for complementary courses "Russian as a Foreign Language Teaching Methods" and "Professional Communication Translating" are being prepared.

A promising plan for raising the level of our teachers' skills is drawn. Teaching methods conferences are held where urgent problems in teaching Russian are discussed. A textbook "Let's strike up an acquaintance!" (L.A. Dines, L.V. Kalashnikova, L.P. Prokofieva) was recently published. A series of textbooks aiming at providing all courses English Medium is being worked out.
